Who better to learn cooking from than MasterChef Gary MacLean? Young people from Kibble and other local schools had a great time watching Gary’s cooking demonstrations before tasting the delicious dishes. Everyone was brave enough to try the tasty meals and they surprised themselves about how adventurous they were.
The young people had the chance to ask the successful chef about his career journey and the opportunities that he had from learning to cook, which included working in New York and his own BBC programme. Gary shared with the groups that at school, home economics was the only subject he excelled in. His piece of advice to the young people was, “Everyone is good at something, you just have to find what it is”.
As Kibble’s largest social enterprise, The Experience reinvests profits into providing training and employment opportunities for young people. It is important for young people to have diverse experiences to find out what they enjoy doing and form possible career aspirations.
The cooking demonstrations came to an end late afternoon and as it turned to dinner time, a tasty 3-course meal was served for staff, customers and young people. The mouth-watering menu was enjoyed by all.
We were delighted to welcome Gary for a visit, giving us the opportunity to taste different dishes. However, we do have a brilliant full-time kitchen team at The Experience, Glasgow. Meet our head chef Donald. Read about his career journey and experience. Our kitchen staff includes two previous Kibble young people who enjoyed cooking while they were at school. The hard-working employees now work closely with Donald at The Experience proving the life skill of cooking can become an exciting career in hospitality.
